Western civilization is characterized by the beliefs that the individual is in control of their environment and is responsible to improve it for themselves and family. Where do these beliefs come from?

It probably originated with the earliest civilizations that settled on great rivers and developed farming. The philosophy was furthered by the Greeks and Romans and renewed again during the Renaissance.

The Ages of Reason and Enlightenment added to this philosophy.
