A city library tracked how many books were borrowed during the summer.

In June, readers borrowed 4,862 books, and in July, they borrowed 5,479 books. How many books were borrowed in these two months? How did you get that answer?

In August, readers borrowed 6,138 more books. How many books were borrowed in total over all three months? How did you get that answer?

The library set a summer goal of 15,000 books borrowed. Did the readers borrow more or fewer books than the goal? By how many? How do you know?

In June, people borrowed 4,862 books. In July, they borrowed 5,479 books. To find out how many books were borrowed in June and July, I added the two numbers:

4,862 + 5,479 = 10,341

So, in June and July, 10,341 books were borrowed.

In August, they borrowed 6,138 more books. I added this to the total from June and July:

10,341 + 6,138 = 16,479

That means, in total, 16,479 books were borrowed in all three months.

The library wanted people to borrow 15,000 books. I checked if they borrowed more or less.

16,479 - 15,000 = 1,479

So, they borrowed 1,479 more books than the goal!

Yay, they did a great job!
