Library Summer Reading

In June, people borrowed 4,862 books from the library. In July, they borrowed 5,479 books. To find out how many books were borrowed in June and July, I added the two numbers together:

4,862 + 5,479 = 10,341

So, 10,341 books were borrowed in June and July.

Then, in August, they borrowed 6,138 more books. To find out the total for all three months, I added the total from June and July to the August number:

10,341 + 6,138 = 16,479

So, people borrowed 16,479 books in total over the summer!

The library wanted people to borrow 15,000 books. Since they borrowed 16,479 books, they borrowed more than the goal! To find out by how many, I did this:

16,479 - 15,000 = 1,479

This means they borrowed 1,479 books more than the goal! It’s great that so many people read this summer!
