Library Books Borrowed in Summer

This summer, our city library said a lot of books were borrowed!

In June, people borrowed 4,862 books. Wow, that’s a lot!
In July, the readers borrowed 5,479 books. That’s even more!

To find out how many books were borrowed in June and July, I added the two numbers together:

4,862 + 5,479 = 10,341

So, 10,341 books were borrowed in total in June and July. I got this answer by adding the numbers together one step at a time.

In August, readers borrowed 6,138 more books. To find out the total number of books borrowed over all three months, I need to add August's number to my last total:

10,341 + 6,138 = 16,479

So, in total, 16,479 books were borrowed over the summer! I did this by writing the numbers down and adding them together, just like the first two months.

The library wanted us to borrow 15,000 books in the summer. I checked if we had more or less than their goal.

We borrowed 16,479 books, which is more than 15,000! I found this by comparing the two numbers.

Now, to find out how much more we borrowed than the goal, I did this subtraction:

16,479 - 15,000 = 1,479

So, we borrowed 1,479 more books than the library's goal! That makes me really happy because it means a lot of people were reading!

The End!
