RIA in medical terms

1 answer

In medical terms, RIA stands for Radioimmunoassay. It is a sensitive laboratory technique used to measure the concentration of antigens (such as hormones, drugs, or proteins) in a sample by using radioactively labeled antibodies. The method is based on the principle of competitive binding and is commonly used in various fields, including endocrinology, immunology, and clinical diagnostics. RIA has largely been supplanted by newer techniques like ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) due to safety and regulatory concerns related to handling radioactive materials.
