Societal attitudes towards mental health affect certain individuals when needing treatment, for example in children, parents might not believe in mental health or treatments, due to the lack of knowledge, how they were raised, culture and religion. This affects the patients ability to get the help they need. It’s important to be an advocate for these children/people who need professional help. Providing up to date information and having these documents assessable to patients is important, as well as speaking to patients about the benefits, using scenarios of real life outcomes are great ways to promote treating mental health issues.

You might respond with appreciation for their insights and expand on their points. Here’s a possible response:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the societal attitudes surrounding mental health, particularly in children. I completely agree that parents' beliefs, influenced by factors like culture, religion, and personal experience, can significantly impact a child's access to mental health care. It’s crucial for advocates, educators, and health professionals to actively work to bridge this gap by providing clear, accessible information about mental health treatments.

I'm particularly interested in your suggestion to use real-life scenarios to illustrate the positive outcomes of seeking help. Personal stories can often resonate more than statistics and may help to reduce stigma. Additionally, it would be helpful to engage with community leaders and organizations to promote mental health awareness in culturally sensitive ways.

What are some strategies you think could effectively challenge the stigma around mental health in various communities? How can we encourage parents to be more open to the idea of mental health services for their children?
