Note for Basic 2 Students: Measuring with Non-Standard Units
Hello, Class!
Today, we are going to learn about measuring lengths, heights, mass, and distances using non-standard units. Non-standard units are fun and creative ways to measure things without using rulers or weighing scales. Instead, we can use everyday objects. Let’s explore this together!
What are Non-Standard Units?
Non-standard units are things we can use to measure, but they are not fixed like a meter or a kilogram. For example, instead of saying something is 10 centimeters long, we might say it is as long as 5 pencils!
Measuring Length
- Example: If we want to measure the length of our desk, we could use paper clips! Count how many paper clips long the desk is.
- Activity: Measure the length of your favorite book using your own hands!
Measuring Height
- Example: To find out how tall a tree is, we can use our own feet! Count how many of your feet tall the tree is.
- Activity: Stand next to an object, like a chair or a table, and see how many of your heights it takes to match that object.
Measuring Mass
- Example: We can use fruits or small toys to measure weight. For instance, if a small box weighs the same as 3 apples, we can say it has a mass of 3 apples!
- Activity: Find different objects at your home, like books or toys, and compare their weights using other items you have!
Measuring Distance
- Example: If you want to know how far it is from your chair to the door, you can count how many steps it takes to get there.
- Activity: Have a race! Measure the distance by counting your big steps or tiny steps.
Why Use Non-Standard Units?
- It is a fun way to learn about measuring!
- It helps us understand size and space better.
- Everyone can use different objects to measure, making it unique!
Remember:
- Be creative with the items you use for measuring.
- Always compare with the same object to get good results.
- Share your results with your friends!
Let’s have fun measuring everything around us! Happy Measuring!
