The Gender-Responsive Climate Educational Materials Workshop is a pivotal component of the Green Rising Program, aimed at empowering youth in Rwanda to actively engage in climate action and promote gender equality in environmental stewardship. This workshop will convene key stakeholders, including government representatives and youth-led organizations, to critically evaluate and enhance existing climate education materials, ensuring they are inclusive and responsive to the needs of girls and women. By training 150 Green Rising ambassadors, the initiative seeks to mobilize 150,000 adolescents and youth, with a focus on planting 70,000 trees in targeted districts, specifically Gisagara. The workshop is dedicated to developing unified educational content that fosters equitable climate education while establishing a collaborative platform for sharing insights. Participants will also work towards selecting the most suitable Kinyarwanda name for the initiative, reflecting its core values of environmental sustainability and gender inclusivity. Scheduled for October 1-2, 2024, at St. Famille Hotel, the workshop represents a coordinated effort to elevate the voices of youth in climate discourse and action across Rwanda.

Gender-Responsive Climate Educational Materials Workshop for the Green Rising Program
Background
The Green Rising is a global environmental initiative aimed at mobilizing young people at the grassroots level to take concrete green actions to protect and adapt to the devastating impact that climate change is exerting on their families, neighbors, villages, towns, and cities. In Rwanda, this initiative will involve the collaboration between government institutions, Youth-Led Organisations, different NGOs, communities, and young people to create a holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
In Rwanda, the Green Rising Program will emphasize on leveraging the role of “Special Umuganda of Youth.” It will train 150 Green Rising ambassadors, equipping them with skills to take leadership roles in climate action. These ambassadors will mobilize young people for environmental conservation actions and promote gender equality in climate change mitigation efforts through collaboration with the National Youth Council, Ministry of Youth and Arts (MoYA), and Youth-led organizations. The Green Rising program will prioritize gender inclusivity, ensuring that at least 50% of participants are female and promoting gender-responsive climate resilience efforts. The program will engage 150,000 adolescents and youth, with at least 50% being girls, in environmental protection actions across Rwanda. The intense focus will be on the Gisagara district, with medium intensity in Gasabo, Kicukiro, Kayonza, Nyagatare, Rulindo, and Rubavu districts, while the lower intensity will be in the remaining 23 districts. 70,000 trees will be planted in Gisagara district, promoting afforestation and enhancing carbon sequestration.
To implement the Green Rising Rwanda Program led and coordinated by the Ministry of Youth and Arts, supported by UNICEF and Rwanda Forestry Authority
(RFA) , We Got Your Back (WGYB) was selected as a youth-led organization to support the program's implementation in collaboration with three other youth-led organizations: Community Health Boosters (CHB), The Green Protector (TGP), and Youths Empowerment Scholars Initiative Rwanda (YESI Rwanda).
With the above background, We Got Your Back (WGYB) has organized a workshop to review existing climate education materials and develop unified, comprehensive, and gender-responsive climate education content. These materials will be used during the implementation of the Green Rising Program.
Goal of the Workshop
Review, enhance, and adapt climate educational materials to ensure they are gender-responsive and inclusive, promoting equitable climate education and action among Rwanda’s youth, especially girls and women.
Objectives
To evaluate existing climate education materials, identify gaps, and assess the inclusivity of women and girls in climate action.
Develop a unified and comprehensive climate education content that integrates gender-responsive and inclusive approaches.
Establish a collaborative platform for participants to share insights, experiences and best practices, contributing to the development of inclusive climate education content.
Plan how the developed climate education content will be used in the Green Rising Program Implementation.
To facilitate a discussion that encourages participants to share ideas and contributions, with the aim of selecting the most suitable Kinyarwanda name for the Green Rising Rwanda initiative, ensuring it reflects the program's values and objectives.
Expected outcomes
A unified, gender-responsive, and inclusive climate education content that facilitates young people to take climate action and inclusivity of women and girls in climate action.
A plan outlining how the harmonized climate education content will be utilized in the Green Rising Program, ensuring that young people are well educated to implement climate action in their communities.
An inclusive climate education content that integrates diverse insights and experiences from all participants.
A suitable Kinyarwanda name for the Green Rising Rwanda initiative reflects the program's mission, values, and objectives.
Dates and Venue
Preparatory meetings will be held on 27th and 29th September 2024
The workshop will be held at St. Famille Hotel from October 01 to 02, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
