would it make sense to say: (i am writing a report on rousseau's belief in the social contract)
"....in which people come to accept the rules of society and agree to follow and pertain to them." ??
thanks, and feedback on making this sentence better? i'm not quite sure i'm fond of the way it sounds. thanks, and much appreciated everyone:)

I don't understand the use of the word "pertain" in this sentence.

Do you mean ". . . agree to follow and promote them . . ."?
