Japan is an island country located in East Asia. It is situated in the Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Asian continent. Japan is comprised of four main islands—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku—along with numerous smaller islands. It lies to the east of the Sea of Japan and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Japan Sea to the west. The country is approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) long and stretches from north to south. The latitude ranges from approximately 45°N in the north (Hokkaido) to about 24°N in the south (Okinawa). Japan is known for its mountainous terrain, with numerous volcanoes, including iconic Mount Fuji, which is the country's highest peak.
