) Everyone's heard of the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs!" It means that it's raining hard. But have you ever heard of it raining fish and frogs? Well, this is something that can really happen!

(2) "Rains" of fish and frogs have been reported for centuries. A second-century BC Greek philosopher by the name of Heraclides Lembus wrote of it raining down so many frogs that houses and roads were covered with them. A naturalist named Pliny the Elder, who lived in the early Roman Empire in the first century AD, wrote about the phenomenon as well. And in 1919, American writer Charles Fort published a book that included tales of "showers of frogs" across the country.

(3) Fish and frog showers are not just something that happened in the past. In 2005, frogs rained down on the Serbian city of Odzaci. In 2010, thousands of fish called perch fell from the sky in a little town in Australia. The residents of Yoro, a small town in Honduras, report rains of fish every year. They happen in the spring and summer. The event is called the Iluvia de peces, which means “rain of fish.” They have an annual festival to celebrate the event, which provides a good source of food.

(4) Of course, fish and frogs cannot actually evaporate into tiny fish and frog droplets and come out of the clouds as rain. Scientists mostly agree that the explanation for raining fish and frogs has to do with waterspouts. Waterspouts are like tornadoes, but not as strong. They begin in the air above water. Then they drop to the surface of the water. They can act like a vacuum, sucking up things and animals from the water. When waterspouts lose energy over land, they drop whatever they are holding – including fish and frogs.

(5) No one has actually seen fish and frogs being sucked up by a waterspout. That’s not surprising, though. People are unlikely to be outside close to a waterspout in a storm. Some people do not believe scientists’ theory about why it rains fish and frogs because it has not been proven. Others do not believe that rains of fish and frogs happen at all. Tell that to the people eating fish from the sky in Yoro, Honduras!
