Describe the role of guilds in the trade and production of goods. How did trade and commerce grow during the middle ages?

There were 2 main types of guilds, merchant guilds and craft guilds. All types of craftspeople had their own guilds, from cloth makers to cobblers to the stonemasons who built the great cathedrals.
