In our class discussions this term, we learned about different theories in sociology that aim to improve our understanding of today’s world. Each of these theories wanted to move away from old ideas and find new ways to explain society. Here, we will look at three important theorists: Max Weber, Structurationist theories, and New Materialist and Post-humanist theories. Each of these approaches helps us understand our current social issues better.
First, let’s talk about Max Weber. Weber focused on the importance of understanding the meanings that people give to their actions. He introduced the idea of "verstehen," which means understanding. Weber believed that to know why people act in certain ways, we must look at their thoughts and feelings. This helps us see the world from their perspective. Next, we have Structurationist theories. These theories, developed by Anthony Giddens, focus on the connection between people and society. This makes the theory very important for studying modern social issues.
Finally, we look at New Materialist and Post-humanist theories. These theories challenge the traditional way of thinking that puts humans at the center of everything. New Materialists argue that we need to pay attention to the materials and non-human factors that influence our lives, like technology and the environment. Post-humanists expand this idea further, suggesting that we should consider all beings, not just humans. In today’s world, where technology plays a huge role in our lives, these theories help us understand the connections between humans, nature, and machines. They remind us to think about the impact of our actions on the world around us.
