Question

World’s End Short Story MGRP – Multi-Genre Research Project

This project requires students to ideate, research, and develop THREE artifacts related to one or multiple short stories they read as part of their Literature Circles meetings during Unit 6. The artifacts can be digitally created or physically created. Along with each artifact, the student will provide an author’s note (1-2 paragraphs) that describes the artifact, the research and intention behind the creation of the artifact, and it’s relation to the short story it reflects; they will also include any works cited.

Artifacts can relate to:

- One short story

- A selection of multiple short stories

- An author who wrote one or more short stories in the unit

Some ideas of artifacts include a(n):

- Personal letter

- Official report (weather report, police report, medical chart, etc.)

- Personal trinket mentioned in the story or the author’s life

- Portrait of a character

- Book cover redesign

- Poem

- Text exchange between characters

- Social media profile of a character

- Board game

- And infinitely more options!

The final project is due to Canvas by May 12th at 11:59pm. Students will submit a PDF portfolio that includes a copy of each of their artifacts and the author’s note following the artifact. Physical artifacts will not be brought to school unless desired for the student showcase on Wednesday, May 14th. Instead, a photo or scan of the artifact will be included on its own page of the PDF portfolio. PDF Format: An example portfolio is linked HERE for reference.

Students will have FOUR days in class of work time to research, create, and draft their author’s notes. Physical artifacts that require crafting supplies may need to be completed at home depending on time to dry or set certain paints and glues. Including the weekend, students have one week to complete the portfolio.

### Brainstorming Resource

**What ideas do you have for your three artifacts?**

1. **Character Profile on Social Media**
Create a social media profile (like an Instagram or Facebook page) for a key character from one of the short stories. The profile will include pictures, character traits, interests, and highlights from the story. It serves as a modern interpretation of the character's life and personality.

2. **Official Police Report**
Draft a police report based on an incident from one of the stories, detailing the events as they unfold in the narrative. This artifact will provide a formal perspective on the consequences of the characters' actions, emphasizing themes of conflict, justice, and morality present in the story.

3. **Poem Reflecting Themes**
Write an original poem that encapsulates the main themes and emotional depth of the short story. This artifact will serve as an artistic expression of the story's ideas, drawing on imagery and motifs present in the text.

**What would you need to research in order to create artifacts that are real and authentic to the mediums you choose?**

1. **Social Media Profile**
Research the likely characteristics of the character (age, interests, life events). Explore existing social media profiles for templates and formatting ideas. Look into how different characters or themes can be expressed visually online (e.g., aesthetics, emojis, and hashtags).

2. **Police Report**
Study the structure and language used in formal police reports, including legal terminology and typical content. This might involve looking at real police reports for reference. Consider the plot details of the short story to accurately portray events leading to the incident.

3. **Poem**
Research poetic forms and techniques, including imagery, symbolism, and structure (e.g., free verse, sonnets). Analyze key themes and emotions in the short story to ensure the poem captures its essence. Reading exemplary poems on similar themes can provide inspiration.
