Question

To Chew or Not to Chew?
J. Nuzzolese

In most schools across America, chewing gum is prohibited. Teachers and administrators argue that many students lack respect for others and their surroundings while using and disposing of the sticky substance, in turn creating a learning environment that is riddled with the sound of popping gum and vandalism of school furniture. Despite these concerns, however, it has been found that the power of chewing gum outweighs the potential for a disruptive classroom.

It is no secret that chewing gum increases academic performance. According to scientists, this is likely because chewing gum increases blood flow to the brain, improving memory. Research shows that chewing gum (particularly mint-flavored) helps combat sleepiness, allowing students to remain more alert and focused on the tasks at hand. This simple act is especially beneficial for students who struggle with ADHD and other sensory process disorders, as it is a soothing and repetitive action that helps their bodies self-regulate.

Not only does chewing gum impact academics, but it also helps improve mental health. One study from the National Library of Medicine found that after chewing gum for either 7 or 19 days, students experienced a significant reduction in depression, stress and anxiety compared to those students who did not chew any at all. With the increasing numbers of students struggling with mental illness, the need for simple and effective solutions is paramount.

Additionally, chewing sugar-free gum comes with the added bonus of aiding with physical health. Chewing increases saliva, which acts as a shield and protects teeth from acid, decay and erosion. According to scientist Adam van Casteren, it can even help ease symptoms of acid reflux and nausea, and has been shown to increase metabolic rate by up to 15 percent. The fact that it helps with halitosis, or bad breath, is yet another perk.

With a plethora of benefits, what better place to start improving student achievement and health than with inexpensive chewing gum? With the proper expectations and protocols set in place, chewing gum should be less of an issue and more of a supportive tool in classrooms.
