Apartheid was a really unfair system in South Africa that made it legal for white people to be separate from black people and other races. Under apartheid, black people were not allowed to live in the same places, go to the same schools, or even use the same bathrooms as white people. This made a lot of people very sad and angry. Events like the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, where many black people were killed just for protesting, showed how bad things were. Nelson Mandela, a brave man, got sent to jail for many years just for fighting against apartheid. In the end, apartheid ended in the 1990s, but it left a lot of bad feelings and hurt in South Africa that people are still dealing with today.
