Apartheid was a system in South Africa where white people made laws that treated Black people and other races unfairly. It started in 1948 and made it so that Black people could not go to the same schools, use the same bathrooms, or live in the same places as white people. This made many people very angry, and some, like Nelson Mandela, fought against it. One big event was the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, when many people protested and the police shot them. This made the world pay attention to the problems in South Africa. Finally, because of many protests and international pressure, apartheid ended in the early 1990s, and Nelson Mandela became the first Black president in 1994, which was a very big deal!
