A political map titled “German Advances, 1938–1939” shows the spread of German control of Europe. In 1938, Germany controlled its own territory and East Prussia in eastern Poland. Also in 1938, Germany took control of the Rhineland on its western border and Austria to its south. In September 1938, Germany took control of the Sudetenland to its southeast. In March of 1939, Germany took control of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia to its southeast, the Protective zone further southeast, and the Memel district to the north of East Prussia. In September of 1939, Germany took control of western Poland.
