,begin bold,The Voice of the Andes, end bold,

The ,begin bold,,begin italics, siku, end italics,,end bold, is a type of musical instrument known as a panpipe. Sikus are what give the folk music of the region of South America near the Andes Mountains its distinctive sound. The siku is made up of two rows of bamboo tubes. Each pipe, or bamboo tube, is a little longer than the one next to it. The tubes in a single row are tied together to look something like a miniature slanted fence. The tubes in both rows are all open at the top (like a bottle without a cap) and closed at the bottom. A person plays the instrument by blowing air across the open end of the tubes, one at a time.

The design of the siku is very important. One row of pipes always has seven tubes, and the second row of pipes always has six tubes. Traditionally, two players, or ,begin bold,,begin italics, sikuris, end italics,,end bold,, were needed to play the instrument, one player for each set, or row, of pipes. One row of pipes contains the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth notes of the scale. The other row of pipes contains the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth, and twelfth notes.

Sikus can be many different sizes. The shortest pipe on some sikus is only two to three inches long, while some of the largest sikus have pipes that are nearly as tall as a person! Although both large and small sikus are played in several countries in South America, sikuris in Bolivia are perhaps the most well-known players. In Bolivia, folk music performances often feature very large groups of sikuris playing sikus of all sizes. The sound these huge groups create when playing together is unlike any other kind of music in the world.
