Question

Thank you for a wonderful year and I hope you enjoyed this class! Instead of answering questions, I would like to know what you learned in this class.

1. Please give me 5 things that you learned in this class over the school year. (Use complete sentences)

While electronic health records are much better than awkward, heavy physical paper files, they have many other advantages as well. EHRs are more efficient because all the information on a patient is stored in one place, rather than in different parts of a healthcare facility. Accessing records from anywhere can improve workflow.

Any EHR will contain many different parts or sections for different types of data. Basic information like name, date of birth, address, and phone number is stored in one part. Other important sections are: past medical history, vital signs, medications, physical exam, progress notes, laboratory results, radiology reports, and patient demographics (statistical data relating to populations or groups within a population.)

In 1996, the United States Congress enacted the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a law designed to protect the privacy and security of patients’ health information.

Conflicts in the healthcare system can not only lead to emotional discomfort and anger but actually contribute to medical errors. Recognizing that conflicts will come up, and having the tools to help resolve conflicts, can help teams manage conflict without resorting to win-lose battles. In healthcare, as in most areas of life, adopting a win-win strategy where everyone involved comes out ahead will keep emotions steadier and end up with the best possible solutions to problems.

In the United States, the healthcare industry[1] surpassed the huge labor forces in manufacturing and retail in 2017. There are now more people employed in healthcare than any other sector of the economy. The reasons for this include an aging population that needs more healthcare, and while manufacturing can be done overseas and shipped back, healthcare must be provided locally. While healthcare jobs are increasing in numbers, the healthcare marketplace is changing. There are many jobs that require less education, but they will not pay as well as jobs requiring more training. The trend in healthcare is towards requiring more education for health professions, so more education may be a very good idea for those entering the healthcare labor market soon.

2. What was your favorite topic we discussed?
