Wegener developed the theory of continental drift based on several lines of evidence, one of which is:
- Mountains in North America appear to be part of the same chain of mountains as those in Northern Europe.
This observation supported the idea that continents were once joined together and have since drifted apart, as similar mountain ranges on different continents suggested a shared geological history. Other evidence Wegener used included the distribution of fossils, the fit of continental coastlines, and geological similarities across continents.
