Question

The thing the Time Traveller held in his hand was a glittering metallic framework, the size of a small clock. He took a table and set it in front of the fire, then on this table he placed the mechanism. The only other object on the table was a lamp, the light of which fell upon the model. There were also candles all about, so that the room was brilliantly illuminated. I sat in a chair near the fire, and moved forward so as to be almost between the Time Traveller and the fireplace, while the others gathered on the left and right sides of him. We were all on the alert, yet it seemed impossible that any kind of trick, however adroitly done, could have been played upon us under these conditions.
"This device," said the Time Traveller, "is only a model, but is my plan for a machine to travel through time. You will notice that here is one small lever, and here is another."
"It took two years to make," he continued, then as we all moved in for a closer look he said, "Now, understand that this lever sends the machine into the future, and this one reverses it. Presently, I am going to press the lever, and off the machine will go. It will vanish, pass into future time, and disappear. Have a good look at it, and the table too, and satisfy yourselves there is no trickery, as I don't want to waste this model and then be told I'm a quack."
There was a minute's pause perhaps, then the Time Traveller went to press the lever, but suddenly said "No," and turning to the Psychologist said, "Lend me your hand." He took the Psychologist's hand in his own and pressed the lever. We all saw the lever turn, and I am absolutely certain there was no trickery. There was a breath of wind, and the lamp flame jumped as the machine suddenly swung round and became a whirl of glittering brass and ivory, then it was gone—vanished! Save for the lamp, the table was bare.
