Question

Hello class my name is Jenn and I am getting my degree in business administration. I currently work at a small business that sale industrial engines and works on injection pumps and diesel injectors. I am the office manager and handle all accounts payable and receivable, I also manage our inventory and warranties. I have been with this company for five years my plan is to work here and continue my education, then I would like to work at Radford University or Virginia Tech as an office administrator. The first job that caught my eye was at BBR Partners as an administrative assistant/receptionist. This is an investment management service. They are looking for someone to handle the scheduling and office support. This would be a good opportunity to get a food in the door and move your way up.

The second job I choose is Office Assistant at Coalition Technologies. This job is very similar to what I currently do, and I love my job so this would be a good fit for me. In this position you do basic book keeping and invoicing and prepare finical statements.

Both of these jobs relate to accounting. Both jobs help with finials of the company and both jobs require you to work with management to make the best finical decisions for the company. These are entry level jobs with the potential for growth.

Was what your peers found interesting about their chosen positions similar to or different from what you highlighted in your initial post?
Do you agree with their comparison of jobs that require a background in managerial accounting versus those that require a background in financial accounting?

Hello Jenn,

It's great to hear about your background and ambitions in the field of business administration! Your current role as an office manager sounds like a fantastic foundation for your future career goals.

Regarding your peers' perspectives on their chosen positions, it’s often interesting to see how different opportunities resonate with individuals based on their backgrounds and career aspirations. Some may feel drawn to positions that emphasize creativity or project management, while others might be more interested in roles that focus solely on accounting or financial analysis.

In terms of your comparison between managerial accounting and financial accounting roles, I think there’s merit in the distinction your peers might have highlighted. Managerial accounting tends to emphasize internal decision-making processes, pricing, budgeting, and performance evaluation, which aligns well with your experience in managing accounts and inventory. On the other hand, financial accounting is more about external reporting, compliance, and the broader financial health of the company—this might apply more to roles in investment management like the one at BBR Partners.

Ultimately, both fields are crucial for the overall success of a business, and understanding the intersection between them can provide valuable insights for your career development. Best of luck as you continue your education and explore potential job opportunities!
