The Unit recommends the following best practices for maintaining your cyber safety. In this activity, you’ll reflect on the practices you do well at and the ones that could use improvement.

Maintain Safe Passwords Use Care When Answering Emails and Phone Calls Back Up Your Important Files Practice Safety in E-commerce Use Secure Cloud Storage Become Aware of Tracking Devices
Step 1: Choose a Practice That’s Solid Choose one of the online safety practices that you think you are doing well on. Open a new word processing document and type the safety practice you chose as a bullet.
Step 2: Choose a Practice to Improve Choose one of these practices that you think you are not doing very well on. Add that as a second heading in your document.
Step 3: Write a Reflection Write a three-to-four-sentence reflection to explain why you don’t think your practices are very safe right now and what you can do to change that. For example, if you choose “Back Up Your Important Files,” you could write about how you don’t practice any backups currently, but how you could start using iCloud or some other cloud service connected to your laptop or phone to start doing so.

Online Safety Practices Reflection

  • Maintain Safe Passwords
I consistently use strong, unique passwords for each of my accounts, and I use a password manager to keep track of them. This practice has helped me avoid using easily guessable passwords and has increased my overall online security.

  • Back Up Your Important Files
I recognize that my practice of backing up important files is not strong right now. I often forget to manually back up my documents and photos, which makes me vulnerable to data loss. To improve this, I plan to start using an automated cloud backup service, such as Google Drive or Dropbox, to ensure that my files are regularly backed up without requiring constant reminders from me. This will provide me with peace of mind and greater security for my important information.
