Question

How did geography affect how cultures developed in the Pacific island nations?

Read the following passage. Drag and drop to complete the sentences.

Aboriginal cultures across Australia adapted to their environments. Coastal and river communities relied on fishing, while inland groups focused on hunting. All Aborigines gathered plants, though desert and coastal regions had different vegetation. Throughout Australia, they built shelters from sticks, covering them with bark in wooded areas and dry grass in deserts.

Similarly, the people of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands had diverse cultures and languages suited to their environments. Around 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, Austronesian-speaking farmers from Taiwan migrated to New Guinea, bringing domesticated animals and seafaring skills. By 800 BCE, they had spread across Melanesia and Micronesia, where the vast number of islands led to the development of isolated cultural groups.
