Write a dialogue in which each of the two characters has a secret. Do not reveal the secret but make the reader intuit it. Purpose: to give two characters individual ways of speaking, and to make dialogue crackle with feelings not directly expressed. Remember that in dialogue, as a general rule, every pause must somehow be shown, either by narration (for example, "she paused") or by some gesture or other break that shows the pause. And remember that gesture is a part of all real dialogue. Sometimes, for instance, we look away instead of answering. Tell me the secrets beforehand, and make them romantic, cruel, heartbreaking, and CRAZY

Character Secrets:

  1. Elena: She has been secretly writing love letters to a mysterious stranger for months, believing she would never send them. The stranger is, unbeknownst to her, her best friend’s boyfriend.

  2. Liam: He is struggling with feelings for Elena, but he is also hiding the fact that he recently broke up with his girlfriend because she discovered his secret infatuation with Elena.

Dialogue:

Elena: (fiddling with her bracelet, glancing at Liam) You know, sometimes I wish I could just… write everything down. All those things I can’t say.

Liam: (leans against the wall, arms crossed) Like a diary? Or are you thinking more grand, like… love letters?

Elena: (her cheeks flush slightly; she bites her lip) Something like that. But, uh, I imagine they’d be too mushy for anyone to read.

Liam: (raises an eyebrow, smirking) “Mushy,” huh? That sounds kind of romantic.

Elena: (looks away, then looks back, her voice soft) Maybe. But sometimes, I doubt how real any of it is. You know? It’s all stuck in my head.

(There’s a heavy pause as Elena shifts her gaze to the ground, brushing dust off her jeans. Liam watches her thoughtfully.)

Liam: (taking a deep breath) Yeah… I get that. There are things I wish I could just… throw out there without worrying how they’d land.

Elena: (cautiously) Like what?

Liam: (a slight hesitation, then he shrugs) I don’t know. Just feelings, I guess. The kind that can complicate everything.

Elena: (surprised, her voice dropping) Complicate everything, huh? That sounds ominous.

Liam: (chuckles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes) Isn’t that what love does?

(Elena bites her lip, eyes focused on something distant, her fingers twisting in her hair.)

Elena: (slowly) Maybe. Or maybe it’s just… something we make more complicated than it has to be.

Liam: (swallows hard, straightening up) True. Sometimes it’s easier to keep things buried. Keeps the peace, right?

Elena: (nods, but her eyes flash with an unspoken challenge) Or it just makes everything heavier. Like carrying around secrets.

(A beat passes, the weight of their unvoiced thoughts hanging in the air. Elena finally looks straight into Liam’s eyes, half-smiling.)

Elena: But, wouldn’t it be nice to say exactly what’s on your mind for once?

Liam: (his voice a low whisper) Yeah, you’d think so…

(They both stand in silence, sharing a moment laden with hidden truths, their secrets a churning storm beneath the surface.)
