Write a dialogue in which each of the two characters has a secret. Do not reveal the secret but make the reader intuit it. For example, the dialogue might be between a husband, who has just lost his job and hasn't worked up the courage to tell his wife, and his wife, who has a lover in the bedroom. Purpose: to give two characters individual ways of speaking, and to make dialogue crackle with feelings not directly expressed. Remember that in dialogue, as a general rule, every pause must somehow be shown, either by narration (for example, "she paused") or by some gesture or other break that shows the pause. And remember that gesture is a part of all real dialogue. Sometimes, for instance, we look away instead of answering.

Title: The Weight of Silence

Setting: A dimly lit kitchen in the early evening. The aroma of pasta wafts through the air, and the sound of boiling water fills the silence.

Ella: (stirring the pot vigorously) You know, I thought tonight could be really special. I found that old recipe you loved. The one with the sun-dried tomatoes.

Mark: (leaning against the counter, arms crossed) Right. (pausing, fiddling with his watch) It's... nice to have some comfort food.

Ella: (glancing at him, then looking back at the pot) Comfort food? (smirking) Or maybe it’s just a distraction from the real world?

Mark: (shifting his weight, avoiding eye contact) What do you mean?

Ella: (stirring slower now) I don’t know. You seemed... distant earlier. Like something was on your mind.

Mark: (clearing his throat, his gaze fixed on the window) Just tired, I guess.

Ella: (raising an eyebrow, leaning closer) Tired of what? Work? Or... maybe something else?

Mark: (taking a deep breath, trying to mask his nervousness) Business is business. You know how it goes.

Ella: (snorting lightly) Yes, I do. Sometimes, I think it’s more about what comes home than what stays at the office.

Mark: (narrowing his eyes slightly) Is that a hint?

Ella: (pretending to focus on the pasta) Just observations. (pausing, biting her lip) You can tell me if something's bothering you, Mark.

Mark: (forcing a smile, shaking his head) No worries. Just the usual grind.

Ella: (studying his face, her expression going serious) Really? Because it feels like there’s a storm brewing, and we’re just stuck in the eye of it.

Mark: (flinching slightly, then trying to mask it with a chuckle) Isn’t that how life is? One moment seems calm, and the next—bam!

Ella: (taking a step back, crossing her arms) Yeah. One moment. That’s all it takes.

Mark: (finally looking at her, his expression faltering) Right. Just one moment can change everything.

Ella: (biting her lip again, stepping closer) We can face things together, you know. Just... don’t shut me out.

Mark: (meeting her eyes, then looking away) It’s not about shutting you out. It’s just... some things are hard to share.

Ella: (softening) I get that. (pause, her voice dropping) But secrets have a way of coming out, don’t they?

Mark: (sighing deeply, running a hand through his hair) Yeah, they do.

Ella: (watching him intently) So, let’s promise to be honest. No matter how hard.

Mark: (nodding, yet hesitating) No matter how hard...

Ella: (smiling faintly, hurt flashing in her eyes) Good. So, what do you think about the pasta?

Mark: (with a forced smile) It’s bound to be delicious... Just like always.

(Pause, the tension thickening in the air as they both stand silently, wrestling with unspoken truths.)

(They return to their respective tasks, but the unacknowledged truths hang between them, heavy and unyielding.)
