Write a dialogue in which each of the two characters has a secret. Do not reveal the secret but make the reader intuit it. . Purpose: to give two characters individual ways of speaking, and to make dialogue crackle with feelings not directly expressed. Remember that in dialogue, as a general rule, every pause must somehow be shown, either by narration (for example, "she paused") or by some gesture or other break that shows the pause. And remember that gesture is a part of all real dialogue. Sometimes, for instance, we look away instead of answering. Tell me the secrets beforehand, but don't include it in the dialogue, and make the secrets completely CRAZY and life changing, and kind of give it a romcom vibe

Character Secrets:

  1. Lila - She’s been secretly painting large-scale murals in the dead of night, expressing her passion for art that she hides from her day job as an accountant. Recently, she’s ironically been recognized in the art community, but the catch is, she’s used a pseudonym. The dilemma? If someone finds out, her safe life and the freedom of artistry might collide catastrophically.

  2. Max - He’s been moonlighting as a wedding planner, a far cry from his day job as a software developer. He once accidentally helped one of his friends’ ex-girlfriends plan a wedding and has since become the go-to for "surprise" events. The twist? He’s fallen for one of the brides, and now he has to navigate his feelings while keeping his side hustle under wraps.

Setting: A cozy coffee shop with ambient music. Light filters through the window, casting a warm glow. Max is seated at a small table fiddling with a sketchbook, while Lila sips on her caramel latte, pretending to read a book.

Dialogue:

Max: (looks up from his sketchbook, smiles) You know, I feel like I’ve seen your name somewhere before. Like on a gallery list or… a mural maybe?

Lila: (glances up quickly, then pretends to focus on her book) Oh? You must be mistaken. Lots of names sound similar… (she bites her lip) You should see some of the art out there.

Max: (leaning in, intrigued) Art, huh? I bet you paint. You carry all that passion around, and it has to go somewhere.

Lila: (sets the book down slowly, choosing words carefully) Passion, sure. But sometimes it’s safer to keep it… under wraps, you know? (she shifts in her seat, resisting a smile)

Max: (raising an eyebrow) Safe, right. That’s what we all want. (pauses, then chuckles) But if you keep your talents hidden, wouldn’t you burst like a balloon?

Lila: (laughs softly, but her eyes dart away) Good point. But what if that burst leads to… chaos?

Max: (grinning) Chaos can be a good thing, like a surprise party! (then quickly serious) You know, surprises aren’t always a bad idea… like a last-minute adventure.

Lila: (picks up her latte, swirling it thoughtfully) Last-minute, huh? Some surprises end up being a little more than you bargained for. (she glances back at Max, playfully) Not that I really believe in coincidences.

Max: (nervously running fingers through his hair) Exactly! Life has a way of tossing us into the deep end. (pauses) Sometimes I wonder if we dip our toes in just to avoid the splash.

Lila: (smirking, leaning closer) You mean, like keeping your head above water? What if someone finds out you’re really a mermaid?

Max: (laughs) Or a sea monster, which could be tricky at social gatherings. (short pause, he gestures as if casting a spell) Imagine revealing that at a wedding. “Hi, I’m Max, but I also plan weddings on weekends.”

Lila: (giggling, playful) And what do you say to the bride? “Don’t worry; I’m totally legit!”

Max: (winks) I’d just have to make sure she doesn’t catch me with my fins out. (he leans back, crossing his arms) What about you? Is your secret a masterpiece or a total disaster waiting to happen?

Lila: (biting her lip, but then defeatedly chuckles) Maybe both. But let’s keep that between us, yeah? (a moment hangs thick in the air)

Max: (nodding, a hint of mischief) Absolutely. Secrets make life… interesting. (a beat, holding her gaze) And sometimes, they make everything feel more alive.

Lila: (her eyes sparkle) Alive, yes! Like that feeling when the world could tip upside down at any moment. A little chaos never hurt anyone.

Max: (heleans even closer, barely a whisper) Or maybe a lot… (as he stares intensely at her, the moment stretches, heavy with unspoken tension)

Lila: (soft smile, warmth in her voice) Then here’s to that kind of chaos. One secret at a time, huh?

Max: (grinning) One twist at a time.

(They share a lingering glance, both aware of the secrets they hold, yet drawn irresistibly closer.)
