Write a dialogue in which each of the two characters has a secret. Do not reveal the secret but make the reader intuit it. . Purpose: to give two characters individual ways of speaking, and to make dialogue crackle with feelings not directly expressed. Remember that in dialogue, as a general rule, every pause must somehow be shown, either by narration (for example, "she paused") or by some gesture or other break that shows the pause. And remember that gesture is a part of all real dialogue. Sometimes, for instance, we look away instead of answering. Tell me the secrets beforehand, but don't include it in the dialogue, and make the secrets completely CRAZY and life changing - world changing even

Character Secrets:

  • Lila: She has discovered a way to communicate with a parallel universe, where a version of her is living an entirely different life, one where she is a celebrated hero.
  • Jonas: He is the offspring of a secret government experiment aimed at creating superhumans, and he possesses abilities that could change the course of humanity.

Setting: A small café on a rainy afternoon. The atmosphere is warm, but there's an electric tension in the air.

Dialogue:

Lila: (stirring her coffee, gaze fixed on the window) You ever think about what could’ve happened if you’d taken that job in New York?

Jonas: (leans back in his chair, crossing his arms) A million things, I guess. But I’m here now, right? (pauses, giving her a sidelong glance) Besides, what difference would it make?

Lila: (her finger tracing the rim of her cup) Maybe it would’ve made everything different. A little taste of… freedom, maybe? (looks away, a shadow passing over her face)

Jonas: (smirks, but there’s a flicker of something serious in his eyes) Freedom? That’s a dangerous word, Lila. You sure you know what it means?

Lila: (raises an eyebrow, a half-smile teasing her lips) Oh, I’m just full of dangerous words today. And you? (leans in slightly, lowering her voice) What’s the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done?

Jonas: (pauses, his expression hardening) That’s a heavy question. (fidgets with his napkin) Let’s just say… sometimes I wish I could rewrite the script. (his eyes narrow, studying her)

Lila: (shifting in her seat, she brushes a hair behind her ear) Would you write yourself a better ending? Or is it the beginning that needs work?

Jonas: (chuckles, but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes) All of it, honestly. You think we get to choose, Lila? Life just… happens. (his gaze drifts to the crowd outside)

Lila: (her voice drops, almost conspiratorial) But what if you could reach out… change it all? (she leans closer, her eyes vibrant with excitement) I mean, really change it.

Jonas: (stiffening, his hands clenching) Some things shouldn’t be changed, no matter how tempting it is. Some doors should stay closed. (his tone is almost a warning)

Lila: (not backing down, her eyes flaring) What if that door leads to something amazing? What if it's a world you didn’t even know existed?

Jonas: (leaning forward, intensity palpable) And what if it leads to chaos? You can’t just unlock everything without knowing what’s on the other side. (he gestures emphatically, nearly spilling out of his chair)

Lila: (pausing, clearly affected by his words, her expression softening) Maybe there’s a point in the chaos. (she bites her lip, revealing her inner conflict) Maybe that’s where the real adventure lies.

Jonas: (studying her, a flicker of understanding in his eyes) Adventure… or disaster? You have to decide which one you’re willing to embrace, Lila. (his voice goes low) Because once it’s out there, you can’t take it back.

Lila: (sighs, reflective) That’s true. But what if it’s worth the risk? (she raises her chin, her resolve strengthening) What if it's everything we’ve been missing?

Jonas: (his jaw tightens, a shadow of fear crossing his features) Just… promise me you’ll think about it. Some journeys are meant to be taken alone. (his gaze is intent, almost pleading)

Lila: (her breath catches, the weight of his words settling) And some journeys, Jonas, are meant to be shared. (she straightens, her eyes gleaming with hidden determination)

(They both sit in silence, the rain pattering against the window, unspoken words hanging heavy in the air.)
