Write a dialogue in which each of the two characters has a secret. Do not reveal the secret but make the reader intuit it. . Purpose: to give two characters individual ways of speaking, and to make dialogue crackle with feelings not directly expressed. Remember that in dialogue, as a general rule, every pause must somehow be shown, either by narration (for example, "she paused") or by some gesture or other break that shows the pause. And remember that gesture is a part of all real dialogue. Sometimes, for instance, we look away instead of answering. Tell me the secrets beforehand, but don't include it in the dialogue, and make the secrets completely mindblowing

Secrets:

  1. Character A (Lila) - Lila has been orchestrating a scheme to take down her corrupt boss, who has been secretly embezzling funds from the company she works for. She has been gathering evidence and plans to expose him, but she also harbors a personal tie to him that complicates her feelings.

  2. Character B (Marcus) - Marcus is in love with Lila but is oblivious to her true motivations. He is hiding a journal containing critical information about her boss, which he found by accident and believed was damaging, but he has interpreted it as her way of expressing her frustrations about work and life.

Dialogue:

Setting: A quiet café, late afternoon. The soft hum of conversation fills the air, but a tension simmers between Lila and Marcus as they sit across from each other, coffee cups in hand.

Lila: (stirring her coffee absentmindedly) You know, sometimes I wonder why we let the world keep spinning when it feels so… broken. (she looks up, a slight smile)

Marcus: (raising an eyebrow) Broken? That sounds pretty heavy for a Thursday. (leans back, arms crossed)

Lila: (fingers tightening on her cup) It is a bit, isn’t it? But… (pauses, glancing out the window) When you see something wrong, don’t you feel like you have to do something?

Marcus: (leaning forward, intrigued) Are we talking about the same thing? You mean work, right? (he chuckles lightly) I thought we were just getting through the week.

Lila: (shakes her head, biting her lip) It’s not just work, Marcus. It’s everything. (she straightens up, eyes narrowing) Like, how many people turn a blind eye because it’s easier?

Marcus: (softly, twirling his spoon) Easier is tempting... (a moment of silence hangs between them as he thinks) I—I guess that's why I’ve been writing a lot lately.

Lila: (looks at him sharply) Writing? I didn’t know you were into that.

Marcus: (smirks, hiding his surprise) Yeah, just a hobby. Nothing serious—just, you know, observations about life, frustrations.

Lila: (a quick, fleeting sadness crosses her face) Observations can be powerful, if they’re seen by the right eyes. (she pauses, and her gaze drifts back to her coffee)

Marcus: (studies her) I think sometimes we’re so focused on the little things, we miss the big picture, you know?

Lila: (smiles faintly) Yeah, the big picture… It can feel like a fog sometimes.

Marcus: (leans in, lowering his voice) What if the fog needs to be cleared? They say the truth can be liberating… (he hesitates) but what you uncover might change everything.

Lila: (her fingers tremble as they wrap around the cup) Everything can change in a heartbeat. I’ve seen it. (she swallows hard, her voice steadying)

Marcus: (nodding slowly) And sometimes, it’s the quiet voices that matter most. (he looks away, his thoughts racing)

Lila watches him, her heart heavy with words unsaid, while Marcus’s expression shields what he holds too closely. The café around them fades as their unspoken truths loom large, shifting the air like a storm brewing just out of view.
