Write a dialogue in which each of the two characters has a secret. Do not reveal the secret but make the reader intuit it. Purpose: to give two characters individual ways of speaking, and to make dialogue crackle with feelings not directly expressed. Remember that in dialogue, as a general rule, every pause must somehow be shown, either by narration (for example, "she paused") or by some gesture or other break that shows the pause. And remember that gesture is a part of all real dialogue. Sometimes, for instance, we look away instead of answering.

Setting: A quiet café, the ambient sound of clinking cups and low chatter fills the air. Outside, the sun casts long shadows through the window where two friends, Emma and Jake, sit at a small table. Both are sipping coffee; a half-eaten pastry lies between them.

Emma: (stirring her coffee, her eyes fixed on the surface) So… um, did you see that article about the new gallery opening downtown?

Jake: (leans back, a hint of a smile on his lips) Yeah, I saw it. Sounds fancy. You thinking of going?

Emma: (hesitates, fiddling with her napkin) Maybe… I mean, I like art, but… (trails off, glancing past him) I don’t know if I’m ready for… big crowds right now.

Jake: (noticing her gaze, shifts his posture) Right. Crowds can be daunting. (pauses, biting the inside of his cheek) But isn’t that part of the excitement? Sometimes you just have to dive in.

Emma: (snorts lightly) Easy for you to say. You thrive in those situations. (leans in, with a teasing expression) That’s not my superpower.

Jake: (chuckles, scratching the back of his neck) Yeah, I guess I can be a, uh, social butterfly. (his smile fades slightly, eyes narrowing) But even butterflies have to come back to their cocoons, don’t they?

Emma: (studies him, her smile faltering) You mean… they need to recharge, you think?

Jake: (nods slowly, avoiding her gaze) Absolutely. Sometimes it’s just… chaotic out there. (glances at her) But it’s good to have balance, you know?

Emma: (sips her coffee, her fingers trembling around the cup) Balance. Right. (pauses, then looks directly at him) You’re good at finding it, I’ll give you that.

Jake: (meets her gaze, intensity in his eyes) And you, Emma, you’re braver than you realize. (leans forward slightly) Just… don’t forget that, okay?

Emma: (places her cup down with a soft thud) Bravery—oh, I don’t know. Sometimes I feel like I’m… (swallows hard, voice lowering) just going through the motions.

Jake: (leans back, crossing his arms) But you’ve got more going on than anyone knows. (absently plays with the pastry crumbs) What you show on the surface isn’t always the whole story.

Emma: (her voice almost a whisper) Isn’t that true for everyone?

Jake: (nods, his expression softening) Yeah, it is. (takes a deep breath, then looks out the window) Everyone has their… layers, right?

Emma: (softly) And some layers are heavier than others.

Jake: (pauses, turning back to her) Exactly. But you know, it’s okay to let some of that weight go. Just… don’t carry it alone.

Emma: (looks down, contemplating his words) I’ll try. (finally meets his gaze) And you know, you should consider doing the same.

Jake: (smirks lightly, hiding a flicker of vulnerability) Maybe one day. (takes a deep breath) But for now, let’s just enjoy our coffee, eh?

Emma: (smiling through a trace of sadness) Yeah… let’s do that.

The conversation lingers in the air, charged with the unspoken, while both characters hold tightly onto their secrets.
