Recent literature on betel nut waste management in the University of Goroka Campus highlights various aspects, including the environmental impact of betel nut disposal, methods for waste recycling, and potential uses in sustainable agriculture. Studies have demonstrated that betel nut husks can be transformed into organic fertilizers and biocomposites, contributing to waste reduction and soil health.
However, a significant research gap exists in assessing the socio-economic impacts of betel nut waste utilization on local communities and integrating traditional practices with modern waste management strategies. Additionally, there is limited exploration of the long-term effects of using betel nut waste on crop yield and soil quality.
The role of my research is to fill this gap by evaluating the potential of betel nut waste as an eco-friendly resource while examining its implications for local livelihoods and agricultural sustainability in the region. This study aims to provide actionable insights for promoting a circular economy within the University of Goroka and surrounding communities.
