(1) People yell "Rats!" when something horrible happens because rats are unpopular creatures. (2) We feed them to our pet snakes. (3) For years, moms and dads have climbed on top of chairs to shriek when rats appeared in their kitchens.

(4) Some people keep a domesticated version of these smart rodents as pets. (5) How is it that the same animal one group hates can be so loved by others? (6) For one thing, there is a difference between the fuzzy domesticated rat and the wild version scavenging for food in city sewers.

(7) Pet rats that form a bond with their masters can grow to be kind. (8) Just as playful as dogs and cats. (9) Rats have been known to nap in human laps and hang out on their owners' shoulders.
