Question

3 of 63 of 6 Items Feature The Impact of Technology Science and technology advances are impressive, but most importantly, they affect society. The twenty-first-century advances that most affect your daily life are probably the development of the World Wide Web, wireless technology, and the smartphone. Thirty years ago, your only phone probably would have been one in your house, attached to a wall. Other than sending letters, it was the only way to communicate with people not present with you. Even if you had a computer at home to play games and write papers, it was most likely only networked with other computers in your home. Even small point-and-shoot cameras were bulky and used film that had to be developed. The only recorded music at your disposal would be what you heard on a radio or the recordings you owned on cassette or compact disc. If you wanted to find information, you would need to look in a hard copy of an encyclopedia or other reference book, which may have required a visit to the library. The term “social media” didn’t exist until about 15 years ago. Everyone’s lives have changed enormously in the last three decades. Scientists in other fields have worked to develop technology that makes people’s lives better. Have you seen a 3-D printer in action? These machines produce a three-dimensional object using specifications sent by a computer. Some doctors now use them to build prosthetics—artificial limbs to replace real ones that people have lost due to illness or injury. Mechanical prosthetics may help people reach a full range of motion, but they’re very expensive. A 3-D printer can construct a prosthetic for a fraction of the price of a traditional one. Scientists are working to make these prosthetics more durable and better at moving like natural limbs. As you can see, teams of people working together and building on the ideas of people in the past can come up with things that were unimaginable until recently. While there are benefits to technology, there are also drawbacks. In some cases, the same technology produces both. The use of robots and other machines have been increasingly used in place of human workers over the past few decades. This is sometimes referred to as automation. The effects on the workforce vary depending on the industry and type of automation. The auto industry has turned to automation more than other industries, and the effects in the communities dependent upon those jobs have been affected the most. The benefits of using robots for the company are obvious—they cost money to make but do not need to be paid a salary or be extended benefits. Goods produced using robots can be cheaper, which benefits consumers. The workers who lose their jobs to automation, however, likely have a different perspective. Automation was part of the driving force behind the shift from an industry-based economy to a service-based economy in the United States.
