a group of fifth grade students are going camping. They will hike from Wellington to Ruapehu. Then they will follow a trail for another 1/2 mile to their campsite.
The distance from Wellington to Ruapehu is 200 miles.
About how long would it take the students to arrive at their campsite if they don't make any stops?

How do you solve this problem?

I have no idea how long it would take anyone, much less fifth-graders to hike 200 miles.

How fast were they walking to cover the 200 and a half mile?

200 miles(1/2 inch)=1056000 feet+1/2 mile (2640 more feet for a total distance of 1058640 feet. Divide by 2 feet( median step length)= 529320 steps. If 100 steps per min, divide by 100 to get the minutes =5293.2 Now divide this by 60 min to get hours=88.22 hours. Now , how do they want the time? Hours or days..you have hours, here's the days divide by 24= 3.7 days of non stop walking (rounded to the 1st decimal point
