Question
Island Types
Introduction to Islands
Islands are small pieces of land that are completely surrounded by water. They are smaller than continents. Islands can occur in different waters—oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers. A large chain of islands found in a large body of water are called an archipelago. There are different types of islands. Two of these are continental islands and oceanic islands.
Continental Islands
Continental islands are pieces of continental shelves that are completely surrounded by water. A continental shelf is an extended perimeter of a continent that used to be part of the continent. Now, for the most part, the shelf is below sea level. Well-known continental islands that come from Europe are Great Britain and Ireland.
Oceanic Islands
In contrast, oceanic islands rise to the surface from the ocean's floor. They are usually formed by volcanic activity. Other times, islands are formed when plate movements push the ocean floor to the surface. The Hawaiian Islands is an archipelago that was formed by volcanoes. The Hawaiian archipelago is made up of eight major islands and several smaller islands.
Other Islands
Besides continental and oceanic islands, there a few minor types of islands. One is an atoll which is a small island made up of coral reef that fully or partially surrounds a lagoon. Another type is an ait, or an eyot, which is an island that is formed in a river, like those found in the River Thames. In addition, cays, also known as keys, are islands that form on the surface of coral reefs. They develop when there is an area of slow current movement which deposit loose sediment; this builds up a reef's surface.
