The Vietnam War was part of the global Cold War conflict between communist and non-communist countries. After the French withdrew from North Vietnam, the U.S. feared the spread of communism, following the “Domino Theory” — the idea that if one country fell to communism, others would follow. To prevent this, the U.S. supported South Vietnam’s anti-communist government, while North Vietnam was backed by China and the Soviet Union.
Despite American efforts, communist forces overran South Vietnam in 1975, leading to the fall of its government. By the following year, Vietnam was reunified under a communist government, marking a significant victory for communist influence in Southeast Asia.
