Are all places along the equator very warm? why or why not?

Two main things affect temperature: latitude and elevation/altitude. All places along the equator are at 0 degrees latitude. What about elevation? Are there any mountains on the equator?

I keep orchids as an avocation. Orchids, for the most part, come from the tropics, but that does not mean hot, humid, swelting climate for orchids many times. Some of the most beautiful come from the mountains elevations, and they grow in cool climate.
