In the movie "The Raiders of the Lost Arc", Indiana Jones and his guide play catch with a gold idol. The idol had a volume of about 1.30 L. In order to determine whether they could really play catch with the idol, calculate the weight (in pounds) of the idol. The density of gold is 19.3 g/cm3 and 1 kg = 2.2 lbs. 1 L = 1000 cc; therefore, 1.30 L = 1,300 cc.
mass = volume x density
mass = 1,300 cc x 19.3 g/cc = 25,090 grams or 25.09 kg.
25.09 kg x (2.2 lbs/kg) = 55.19 lbs. You can round to 1 decimal place and make your decision as to the mass being too heavy or not.
