A saltwater fish is best adapted to a hypertonic environment. In a hypertonic environment, the concentration of solutes outside the fish (in the seawater) is higher than that inside the fish's body, which leads to water moving out of the fish to equalize the concentration. Saltwater fish compensate for this by actively drinking seawater and excreting excess salts through their gills.
