4. Any person attempting to suborn a juror by a bribe of grain or gold shall be deemed to be guilty of felony and shall receive such punishment as might be adjudged proper to inflict upon a person guilty of the offense for which such trial was being conducted.

Why grain/corn?

1 answer

Grain or corn is often used as a symbol of wealth and prosperity. In many societies and historical contexts, grain was a valuable commodity and a primary source of sustenance. By specifically mentioning grain or gold as a bribe, this law implies that the act of bribing a juror with something of value is highly illegal and punishable. The inclusion of grain or gold in the law serves to emphasize the seriousness of the offense and to encompass both a tangible and valuable resource (grain) and a universally recognized symbol of wealth (gold).
