What Skills Are Important for My Future Career?
Required Materials
Word processing software
Google Slides (requires login)
Weebly (requires login)
You’ve already done some initial research on what jobs you might be well-suited for. Let’s take that research to the next level by focusing on the specific skills you may need for some of your top job prospects.

Step 1: Professional Skills
Choose THREE jobs that you are interested in. You may want to choose one or more of the jobs you investigated previously. However, you don’t have to limit yourself to jobs that you can do now, although those are good choices, too. One or more of your choices could be more aspirational—maybe even your dream job!

Now brainstorm some of your professional skills and aptitudes:

What are you good at?
Do you have the skills to do any of the THREE jobs you chose right now?
What skills do you need to acquire in order to get a job that’s more aspirational or in your dream field?
Take notes on your responses in a word processing document.

Step 2: Personal Skills
Now, consider some of the personal and interpersonal skills that you will need for any of your THREE jobs:

Responsibility
Dependability
Punctuality
Integrity
Positive attitude
Initiative
Time management
Planning
Respect for others
Professional dress
Are there any that stand out to you as more important than the others?

Which ones are you already demonstrating, and which ones do you need to work on?

Choose THREE of these interpersonal skills and brainstorm why they are important for your chosen jobs. Add this work to your document.

Step 3: Summarize your Findings
Summarize your findings by creating a presentation using Google Slides. Organize your content, making sure to answer each of the questions in the previous steps. Your presentation should also include at least THREE of the following:

Shapes
Images
Bullets
Links
Audio or video
Transitions
Animations
To create a link to your presentation, click on the yellow Share button. Change Restricted to Anyone with the link, and then choose Copy link.

Step 4: Add a New Web Page
Add your slide presentation to the most recent Weebly web page you created. Be sure to add a title and brief description of the presentation. When you have finished editing your website, click Publish in the upper-right corner.

Step 5: What to Submit
For this activity, submit the following to the dropbox:

A link to your slide presentation (Step 3)
The URL for you updated web page (Step 4)

Step 1: Professional Skills

Choose THREE jobs you are interested in. (For example, let's say you're interested in the following jobs: Web Developer, Data Analyst, and Marketing Manager.)

  1. Web Developer

    • Skills I am good at: Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS, problem-solving, and logical thinking.
    • Current Skills: I have basic web development skills and can create simple websites.
    • Skills to Acquire: I need to learn JavaScript and back-end development skills.
  2. Data Analyst

    • Skills I am good at: Analytical skills and attention to detail.
    • Current Skills: I can use Excel and basic data visualization tools.
    • Skills to Acquire: I need to learn SQL and advanced data analysis techniques.
  3. Marketing Manager

    • Skills I am good at: Creativity and communication.
    • Current Skills: I can create content for social media.
    • Skills to Acquire: I need to understand digital marketing tools and strategies.

Step 2: Personal Skills

Evaluate the following personal and interpersonal skills. (Choose three that resonate the most with your chosen jobs.)

  1. Responsibility

    • Importance: As a Web Developer, taking responsibility ensures that projects are completed on time and maintain high quality.
  2. Initiative

    • Importance: In a Marketing Manager role, showing initiative can lead to innovative ideas and drive campaigns that stand out.
  3. Time Management

    • Importance: For a Data Analyst, managing time effectively is critical to ensure timely delivery of reports and analysis.

Demonstration:

  • I am currently responsible and take initiative in my school projects.
  • I need to work on my time management skills to balance my studies and extra-curricular activities better.

Step 3: Summarize your Findings

Create a Google Slides presentation summarizing the above points. Add the following elements to your presentation:

  • Shapes: Use shapes to highlight important points.
  • Images: Include relevant images for each job.
  • Bullets: Use bullet points for skills and importance.
  • Transitions: Apply transitions between slides for smoother navigation.
  • Audio or Video: Consider adding a brief audio explanation of your findings.

Step 4: Add a New Web Page

On your Weebly webpage, add the Google Slides presentation. Title the page “Professional and Personal Skills for My Future Career.” Provide a brief description such as:

“This presentation outlines the professional and personal skills crucial for my future career, including analysis and self-reflection on skills I possess and those I need to develop.”

Step 5: What to Submit

When submitting your project, include:

  • A link to your Google Slides presentation.
  • The URL for your updated Weebly webpage.

Ensure your work is polished and follows the grading rubric closely for maximum points. Good luck!
