Ranchers in Sweetwater, Texas hold a rattlesnake round up each year. The ranchers decide to build a cage 24 ft by 12 ft to hold the snakes. They place poles to support the cage 3 ft apart around the perimeter. How many poles are needed?

Well I found the perimeter by adding 24, 24, 12 and 12. Which is 72. Then I divided by 3. Which got me to 24. So I think it's right.

If you draw a diagram, you'll see that you'll get 24 three-foot spaces. But you don't need 24 supports.
