Jesse Raven had been an outstanding mathematician in her previous school. Her math coach had gushed over her skills in competition: “You are an exceptional, competitive tiger.” It was thrilling feeling both fierce and mathematically brilliant, and Jesse yearned to be exceptional in her new school, too. To her dismay, she found that she had a formidabel challenger in Thomas Fitzgerald, the school’s MVP in math for the past three years.

At first, she could hardly concentrate on anything but becoming the best in the school; but, after realizing this may not be the best of plans, she was suddenly inspired having an ingenious idea .At lunch, she went up to Thomas’s table and said, “We’re the best math Olympians in this school; if we work together, we can become absolutely awesome—what do you think?”

Thomas chewed his sandwich deliberately, contemplating her offer he opened his notebook to share a calculus problem he’d been working on. Jesse sat down and gave a suggestion toward a solution. Thomas smiled and nodded, and from that moment on the two were not only the most brilliant mathematicians in their school, but also the best of friends.
