Ladies and gentlemen of the council, thank you for the opportunity to speak to you this evening. Soil conservation affects us all. Soil helps to sustain life as it runs over the land, and it helps to filter water as it passes through the ground. It protects ecosystems by providing a home for many plants and animals, and it helps to maintain balance in the environment. As you consider the options for the ground in front of our new city hall, please keep in mind that the area is subject to serious erosion.
While grass and other ground cover can provide some protection from erosion, the best option would be to incorporate many native plants into the landscaping. The root structures of these native plants help hold the soil in place so that it doesn't wash away during heavy rains or flood conditions. Native plants are well adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, making them more resilient and sustainable in the long run.
I'm asking you to make the decision to protect our soil and prevent erosion by considering the planting of native species in this important area. Thank you.
