In the book "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Harriet Jacobs, there is a character called the Jealous Mistress. Her real name is Mrs. Flint. At the beginning of the story, Mrs. Flint is mean and very jealous of the main character, Linda. She gets angry because Linda is pretty and catches the attention of her husband, Mr. Flint.
In the beginning, Mrs. Flint shows her jealousy by being cruel to Linda. She treats her poorly and tries to make her life difficult. She doesn't want Linda to have any happiness or friends. Mrs. Flint is always watching Linda and looking for ways to make her life harder.
As the story goes on, we see some changes in Mrs. Flint. Even though she stays mean, her actions show more of her weakness. Linda becomes stronger and learns how to stand up for herself. This makes Mrs. Flint more upset and scared. Instead of making Linda feel bad, Linda becomes brave and smart.
So, while Mrs. Flint doesn’t change to be a nicer person, we see that her jealousy and anger actually make her weaker because she can't control Linda's spirit. Linda’s strength in facing her makes the reader feel that she is much stronger than Mrs. Flint, even though Mrs. Flint tries to be in charge. This shows how powerful a person can be when they believe in themselves and fight for their freedom.
