writing narrative text Imagine you’ve been at sea for days, sailing and sailing. It’s been an adventure, for sure, but you’re ready to plant your feet again on dry land. Finally, you make out the shore, in the distance; soon you will arrive—you’re just not there quite yet. For some narrative writers, spotting dry land is what the experience of finally reaching the conclusion of their narrative is like. The hard, creative work you’ve put in so far has got you to this exciting milestone, but you still have one section left to go. While it may seem like you’ve told most of your story and now you can kick back, it’s important to stay focused. A good conclusion can leave readers feeling gratified, as well as giving them a lot to reflect on. However, a conclusion that lacks energy or logic can frustrate and disappoint readers. Writing an Effective Conclusion The conclusion is the story’s resolution. It ties up loose ends and tells how the main character ultimately handles their problem. The conclusion also conveys what characters learned from their experience. Before narrative writers begin their conclusion, they reflect on the main character’s conflict and the most important events in the plot. As part of that process, writers often consider these questions: What loose ends might readers wonder about? Are there unanswered questions I need to answer? How can I show how the conflict has changed my main character?

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the waves, I squinted into the distance, my heart racing with anticipation. It had been days adrift on this vast, open sea—navigating storms and calm alike, battling the relentless pull of the tides, and grappling with my own thoughts as I stood watch at the helm. The remnants of my adventures swirled in my mind like the salty spray that whipped over the bow; there had been challenges aplenty, each moment sculpting me into something new. Yet, now, with the outline of land creeping ever closer, a mix of relief and apprehension flooded my senses.

Finishing the arduous sail across the endless blue felt remarkably like reaching the climax of my narrative. The events that had unfolded throughout my journey had painted a vivid tapestry of experiences, and yet, I found myself staring down the final chapter—a crucial endeavor full of potential and promise. The shore beckoned, an echo of all my struggles, but I knew all too well that I could not coast to a halt now. Just as my story had seen conflicts and alterations, this conclusion needed to carry weight and resonance, wrapping up the journey while offering the readers something to ponder.

As I prepared to dock, I thought about the loose ends that simmered in the depths of my narrative. Had I fully addressed the regret that had compelled me to set sail in the first place? It was not merely a physical journey but one filled with emotional reckoning. Did I illustrate how the challenges had stirred change within me? The wild storms, the solitude of night, and the silent whispers of the ocean had coalesced into a profound awakening. I could not let this conclusion falter or spiral into ambiguity; it needed clarity—and consequence.

The waves gently rolled beneath the boat, cradling it as I drew nearer to the shore. I recalled the pivotal moments that had stretched before me: the encounter with the mysterious shipwreck that bore the secrets of another's turmoil; the day I discovered the map to lost treasures, not just of gold, but of self-discovery; the night spent beneath a blanket of stars, where I confronted my deepest fears, allowing them to wash away like the tide. Each memory was a steppingstone, guiding my reflection of what I had learned.

“What had changed in me?” I pondered. The once timid sailor had transformed into a captain of my fate. The waves had taught me resilience; the storms had imparted strength, and the silence, a deep appreciation for belonging.

With the final turn of the rudder, the vessel glided closer to solid ground. The shouts of a welcoming party reached my ears, mingling with the gentle sounds of the surf. My heart beat in tandem with the excitement of new beginnings—a new life built not just on land, but on the foundation of everything that journey had taught me.

As I stepped off the boat onto the rugged sands of the shore, I felt the textured grains beneath my feet, grounding me once more. I turned back to the sea, grateful for the trials it presented and the way it shaped me. The resolution of my tale lay not only in the adventures lived but also in the person I had become through the experience. The horizon stretched infinitely before me, a canvas of future possibilities bathed in the hues of dusk.

With one last glance back at the vessel that had carried me through heartache and discovery, I knew this chapter was complete, but the story of my life would continue to unfold, fueled by the lessons learned in the waves. I walked forward, ready to embrace whatever came next, my spirit full—my narrative is far from over, and the best was yet to come.
