Our experiments tested the psychological effect inthe present of recalling different types of pastmemories. Participants were asked to report theircurrent level of satisfaction with their lives. Then, participants randomly assigned to the first groupwere asked to recall a special moment fromchildhood. Participants in the second group wereasked to recall an ordinary event from childhood.Next, both groups completed questionnaires togauge their level of gratitude, future outlook, andgeneral demographic information.
The results of our study found a positive relationshipbetween recalling positive memories and gratitude.Participants generally had a more optimistic outlookafter recalling a special memory than did participantswho recalled neutral events.
