The biggest challenge the nation faced during Reconstruction was abolishing slavery and granting equal rights to former slaves. To address this issue, the government enacted the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which aimed to abolish slavery and ensure civil rights for African Americans. This challenge was particularly significant because many people in the South were resistant to the idea of ending slavery and granting rights to African Americans. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan actively opposed these changes, believing that African Americans should be denied civil rights. Changing deeply entrenched rules and traditions that were unjust to African Americans proved to be extremely difficult, especially given the widespread opposition in the South.

Here is what I wrote:
The biggest challenge the nation faced in reconstruction was abolishing slavery and letting past slaves have equal rights. The government made the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment to abolish slavery and to help African Americans including past slaves to have civil rights. It was the biggest challenge because the south still did not agree with abolishing slavery. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan did not agree that African Americans should have civil rights. It was difficult to change rules and traditions that were unfair to African Americans especially when the south disagreed.
