LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL

Credit Line: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” April 16, 1963. The Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr.

King says, “You may well ask: 'Why direct action? Why sit-ins, marches and so forth? Isn't negotiation a better path?' You are quite right in calling for negotiation. Indeed, this is the very purpose of direct action. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored.”

In this statement, King employs logos as his rhetorical strategy. He provides a logical explanation for the need for direct action by clarifying that the purpose of nonviolent protests is to create a crisis that compels the community to confront issues that have been ignored. This appeal to reason supports his argument for the necessity of direct action rather than solely relying on negotiation.
